In the Vevče paper mill (Brigl & Bergmeister) we have a supercalander SK5 made by Bruderhaus (now Voith). The drives were controlled by Siemens Simoreg 6RA70. The rewinding functions were programmed in T400 cards. The latter were no longer available and the machine could not be maintained. At the same time, we had problems with excessive ejection due to paper residue on the unwinding tambour. ELCON replaced the drives with SIMAMICS DCM 6RA80. The rewind functions were programmed on a PCS7 system in CFC language. The target stop functionality was also programmed. This has reduced ejection, as target stopping ensures minimal paper residue on the unwind roller. When the drives were replaced, the control was made more optimal, so the calender now runs at full speed, whereas before this was not possible due to vibrations. This rebuild gave us confidence in ELCON’s knowledge of drives and we decided to rebuild other machines in cooperation with them.

The MM Količevo paper mill had a coating kitchen that was underproducing and the control system did not allow for the expansion of the dispersers. ELCON reprogrammed the system to a Siemens DCS system PCS7 + SIMATIC BATCH. At the same time, the system was supplemented with an additional disperser, which increased production. Now the system is up-to-date, the supplier ELCON is supporting us and we also make some changes to the system ourselves. We also have no problems with spare parts, which makes it easier to maintain the system. The new dispersers have increased production and the new DCS system makes it easier for operators to operate.

At Cinkarna Celje we have a TiO2 surface finishing plant (PD2) that was equipped with old control equipment (Siemens simatic S5 and Factory link SCADA). The equipment was outdated and we could no longer obtain suitable spare parts for it. We therefore decided to rebuild the system. ELCON produced the electrical plans, the electrical cabinets, disconnected the old cabinets and connected the new ones, and created a new software application using Siemens PCS7. The new equipment reduced the number of congestions. As more frequency converters were used, energy efficiency was also improved. The production shutdown was carried out within the planned timeframe, quite quickly for such a volume. This was the first project where we used PROFINET (until now PROFIBUS). After the upgrade, we have received proof and confirmation of the reliability of this PROFINET communication protocol, and we will introduce it wherever possible in the future. The new control and monitoring system is modern and ready for further expansion.
